Professional whitening is peroxide-based, and so is most of what is on a shelf. What differs here is that a dentist examines the teeth and gums first, works out what is causing the colour, and says whether whitening will do anything for it. For some kinds of discolouration it will not.

Anything that has to come first
Untreated decay, gum inflammation, a leaking filling or heavy tartar are dealt with before whitening begins. A cleaning is often recommended first, so the starting shade is judged on enamel rather than buildup.

Your shade is recorded against a guide before treatment, so there is something to compare with afterwards. It does not predict where you will end up.

The appointment
The lips, gums and soft tissue are protected, then the peroxide gel is placed, monitored, and reapplied during the visit if the system calls for it. Book two hours.

Afterwards
Temporary sensitivity is common and usually settles. Fillings, crowns, veneers and bridges do not change colour, so an existing restoration can look darker once the natural teeth lighten. Anyone with a front-tooth filling or crown is warned about that in advance.

Will it hurt?
Temporary sensitivity is one of the more common effects of whitening, and gum irritation can happen where gel meets tissue. Neither means something went wrong. Tell the team about any sensitivity, recession or exposed roots you already have, and the approach is adjusted: shorter applications, less often, or a pause.
Does insurance cover it?
Whitening is usually treated as an elective cosmetic service, so plans rarely cover it — but they vary, and your provider is the one who can tell you. The fee is confirmed at the free consultation before anything is booked.
Will it look fake?
No particular shade is promised here, and no perfectly even one either. Some teeth lift faster than others, and white spots or areas of fluorosis can become more or less noticeable as the colour around them changes. Yours are looked at for exactly that before anything is booked.
What if I’d rather whiten at home?
Custom trays and disposable trays both exist, and the dentist works out which of them suits you, if either does. Whichever you use, follow the instructions exactly: more gel or longer wear increases sensitivity without a predictable extra benefit.
What if I’m due for a cleaning?
A cleaning is often recommended first where there is plaque, tartar or heavy surface staining. That is partly so the gel works on enamel rather than buildup, and partly because the starting shade cannot be judged through either. Book the cleaning and the whitening consultation together and you make one trip.

How white will my teeth become?
A particular shade cannot be promised. How much the colour changes depends on the original shade, the cause of the discolouration, the type of stain, the condition of the enamel and how you respond. That is what the consultation assesses.
Do I need a consultation first?
Yes. A free ten-minute whitening consultation is required before in-office whitening. It is where the teeth and gums are examined, the cause of the discolouration is identified, and the fee is confirmed.
How long is the appointment?
The in-office appointment is booked as two hours.
Are take-home trays included?
No. Custom trays and disposable trays are separate items with their own fees. Whether either is appropriate for you is discussed at the consultation.
How long will the result last?
Whitening is not permanent, and no duration is promised here. How long the colour holds depends on ageing, coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and your daily cleaning. Maintenance may be appropriate later, but repeated or excessive whitening is not recommended.
Will it whiten my crowns, veneers or fillings?
No. Whitening works on natural tooth structure and does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges or dentures. Once the natural teeth lighten, an existing restoration may no longer match. That is discussed before treatment.
Will it make my teeth sensitive?
Often, and temporarily. Sensitivity is one of the more common effects of whitening, and gum irritation can occur where gel contacts the tissue. Tell the dental team about any existing sensitivity, recession or exposed roots beforehand so the application can be shortened or spaced out.
Can I whiten if I have cavities or gum problems?
Untreated decay, active gum disease, cracked teeth and leaking restorations are addressed before whitening. Whitening is also generally deferred during pregnancy because it is an elective treatment.
