What Are Signs You Might Need a Root Canal?

Your teeth may seem sensitive to hot or cold. A cracked tooth or deep cavity may be a reason that infection develops. Some of the signs are:

  • Severe pain while chewing
  • Pimples appear on the gums
  • Swollen and tender gums
  • Darkening of the gums and deep decay

What Is a Root Canal?

It starts with a bad toothache. You may get temporary treatment to relieve the pain, but a root canal is recommended. This treatment is designed to rid your teeth of bacteria that is the result of an infected tooth. This prevents reinfection. The dentist removes the infected or inflamed pulp of the tooth. They then clean the inside of the tooth as well as disinfect it. The last step is filling and sealing the tooth. The whole procedure is relatively painless and is an effective way to save the tooth; chewing, biting and smiling will all be back to normal again.

How Long Does It Take?

There are usually two sessions involved in root canal treatment. Each appointment may last 60 to 90 minutes. Your teeth will be numb after treatment, but after the sensation returns, you may eat normally again. You can return to work or school after the procedure.

Why Have a Root Canal?

There are many advantages of having a root canal, with the saving of the tooth being the first. Your chewing will be efficient once more and normal biting and sensation will be the result. For a front tooth, your smile will look the same. Leaving the tooth in your mouth, rather than pulling it, will protect the nearby teeth from strain or excessive wear. Saving your natural teeth is the best option, if possible. Many endodontic treatments last a lifetime.

How Can a Root Canal Be Avoided?

The best way to avoid ever needing a root canal is to practice great oral health. This means brushing at night and morning, changing your toothbrush every three to four months. Floss daily and use additional tools to help remove food from teeth. There are foods that cause cavities, such as sugary drinks, candy and dried fruit, which can be replaced with healthier fresh fruit. Alcohol dries your mouth; saliva keeps it healthier, so drinking lots of water will help. In another post, we’ll discuss a tooth-healthy diet. Regular dental checkups can spot problems before they become major issues and cause an infection. We’re your local dentist Toronto downtown and are easy to reach. Contact us for an appointment.
